Cebu (Sugbo in Cebuano dialect) is one of the provinces of the Philippines located to the east of Negros, to the west of Leyte and Bohol. Cebu is a long narrow island surrounded by smaller islands including Mactan, Malapascua, Olango, Bantayan and the Camotes Islands. Its capital is Cebu City, the oldest city in the Philippines. It has four neighboring cities which include Lapu-Lapu City, Mandaue City, Talisay City and Danao City. Mactan-Cebu International Airport, located in Mactan island, is the second busiest airport in the Philippines. Cebu is one of the most developed provinces in the Philippines. In fact, Cebu City is the main center of education, commerce, trade and industry in the Visayas. Furthermore, the United Kingdom based Condé Nast Traveler Magazine named Cebu the seventh best island destination in the Indian Ocean-Asia region in 2007, eighth best Asian-Pacific island destination in 2005, seventh in 2004 and in 2009.

Discover Camotes Islands


If you are looking for some white sand beaches or maybe you want to make a long morning walk on a long white sand shore, then you shouldn’t miss the Camotes Islands. These four islands which situated in the Northeast Visayas are well known for its white sand beaches. More specifically, the four islands are about 562 km. [350mi.] southeast of Manila, 62 km. [38 mi.] northeast of Cebu and 25 km. [15 mi.] west of Ormoc. One can go there through a two hour ship ride from Danao, Cebu.

An old story about the islands say that there were Spaniards who asked some native islanders farming about the island’s name, they thought the Spaniards were asking what they were putting in their baskets so they replied Camote and the rest is history, it was then called Camotes Islands. The climate is typified by its district as dry season. The people’s main livelihood there is fishing and farming.

As per the 2007 done census, the Camotes Islands have a total population of 89, 324 people. They speak Cebuano except in one Municipality named Poro where Camotes Visayan, called Porohanon. Porohanon is distinguished by the way the locals pronounced /y/ sound with /z/. An example would be the morning greeting, "Maayong buntag" ("good morning"), in Porohanon, they will pronounce it as "Maazong buntag".
